POUGHKEEPSIE – One of outgoing Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik’s plans was to convert the one-way section of Market Street downtown into two-way.
It was estimated to cost between $8 million and $10 million, money the city doesn’t have.
Tkazyik said before the traffic flow could have been converted, there would have to be an extensive rebuild underground.
“That included all of the infrastructure especially the water mains that needed to be replaced underground,” the mayor said.  “You couldn’t just slap on paint and redirect lines for traffic flow. More work needed to be done within that area.”
Tkazyik said two-way traffic would open up many more needed parking spaces along that main thoroughfare and bring more traffic into the city.
