NEWBURGH – Imagine using
a smart phone app to order a ferry ride from Newburgh to Beacon? That
is something Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino wants to consider.
The manager said more service, via a smart phone, could aid the continued redevelopment of the Hudson River waterfront.
“Presently we have an evening and morning schedule on weekdays, Ciaravino noted.  “We do not currently have weekend or during the day. As many of us have come to learn about Uber taxi, for any budding entrepreneurs out there we are looking for a viable business model very similar to the FYI Newburgh equation where you can download an app and it’s just an Uber ferry so anytime you wanted a ferry you can dial it up and schedule it, reserve it ahead of time. We believe that this crucial piece of infrastructure will help us go forward.”
The Newburgh City Council on Monday night approved an extended agreement with the owners of the waterfront property where the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry docks as well as the parking area for that service.
Two years ago, Uber, the increasingly popular alternative taxi service, launched a ferry operation in Boston.
