Caslen: “… a safe and secure
institution”

WEST POINT – The recent terrorist attacks in California and France have resulted in officials at the US Military Academy at West Point to heighten security measures.
In an open letter to the community on Tuesday, Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen, Jr. said he is “charged with the responsibility to protect this community and provide a safe and secure installation. Part of that responsibility is to act upon intelligence or law enforcement information in a way that best serves this community. The actions we took on Sunday were a result of that responsibility.”
Caslen said he would not discuss specific threats or how long heightened security would remain in effect.  “Recent events, abroad and at home, have shown us the need to take prudent steps to ensure our force protection posture can be increased both quickly and effectively.”
The superintendent told the community it should “expect force protection adjustments like this to be the new norm.” To ensure they “effectively execute our force protection mission, random antiterrorism measures must be conducted at an unpredictable frequency, rather than in response to a specific threat,” he wrote.
Caslen urged members of the West Point community to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement authorities, which on West Point is 845-938-3333.
