ALBANY – Members of the College Democrats of New York group voted to call on Ulster County Executive Michael Hein to run for the 19th Congressional District seat in New York. Hein is a Democrat. Incumbent Republican Congressman Christopher Gibson is not seeking reelection next fall.  Instead he is considering a statewide run, possibly for governor.
The group said if Hein runs, they would make the race for the 19th District a “priority race” and is prepared to commit “the time and resources necessary to elect a proven leader like Hein to Congress.”
“Young people across the 19th Congressional District deserve a representative who adequately represents them,” said group President Jamie Zieno. “Republicans like John Faso, Pete Lopez, and Andrew Heaney are the exact opposite of adequate representation. They oppose progress on issues such as college affordability, LGBT rights, women’s rights, and the environment – issues young people truly care about.”
Hein has not made any announcement about a possible run, but has acknowledged he would consider it.
The county executive last month won reelection to the county’s top job, defeating Republican Terry Bernardo who had made speculation over a possible Hein congressional run a campaign issue.
