GOSHEN – A total of 25 people have been charged with welfare fraud in Orange County for illegally obtaining over $230,000 in public assistance benefits administered through the county Department of Social Services.
The enforcement action was the result of joint efforts of the DSS, the sheriff’s office and district attorney’s office.
Of the $231,624 in public assistance benefits alleged to have been fraudulently obtained by the defendants, $108,043 was paid to those who fraudulently obtained Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Payments, known as food stamps.
It is alleged that $7,525 was fraudulently received by recipients who filed false documents to receive Home Energy Assistance Program benefits.
Recipients are alleged to have fraudulently received $3,073 in daycare benefits and that recipients obtained $7,746 in interim Temporary Assistance benefits.
A total of $105,237 was fraudulently obtained in Medicaid payments.
