Visitor to Dutchess jail charged with smuggling drugs

POUGHKEEPSIE – A Poughkeepsie man has been arrested and charged with introducing drugs into the Dutchess County Jail.
The county sheriff’s office reports that William Smart, 59, of Poughkeepsie brought the contraband into the Poughkeepsie jail on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 10.  During a visit, Smart was observed by jail staff allegedly passing contraband – pills and marijuana – to an inmate.
Smart was charged with criminal possession of drugs and promoting prison contraband, both misdemeanors, and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was released on an appearance ticket.
