KINGSTON – The illegal use of opioids in Ulster County is on the rise as it is around the region and medical professionals discussed the implications at a HealthAlliance addiction conference in Kingston on Friday.
Allen Nace, the administrative director of community rehabilitation services at the Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley, said it has become more difficult to acquire multiple prescriptions for opioids, thus aiding the illicit market.
“I believe there has been a shift and it has become more visible,” Nace said.
That is due, in large part, to a state law that requires doctors and pharmacies to check a database to determine if a patient has secured a prescription for a narcotic for which they are seeking another one.
The falling price of opioids on the street is also contributing to increased purchase and use, Nace said.
