GOSHEN – By a 17 to 2 vote on Thursday, the Orange County Legislature adopted County Executive Steven Neuhaus’ proposed 2016 budget.
Lawmakers made minor changes to the $725.3 million spending plan, which now goes back to the county executive, who said he will sign it with the changes.
“I believe the budget is smooth sailing and is heading full steam ahead to be adopted,” Neuhaus said of his decision to not veto anything.
The county executive said the retirement incentive that was offered months ago reduced the ranks of county employees by some 300, thus saving those payroll expenses.
The budget included $7.5 million less in county spending than this year.
Even with the cuts, the property tax levy would go up about two percent
but stays under the state tax cap.
