TOWN OF MONTGOMERY – The
threat of rain didn’t keep a large crowd from honoring veterans
at the Montgomery Town Hall. Town Supervisor Mike Hayes predicted the
rain would stop in time to hold the 11 a.m. ceremony outdoors, and it
did.

Congressman Maloney, right, addresses those at the ceremony

Among the speakers, County Legislator Michael Anagnostakis.

“Some people don’t want to believe it but there is evil in
the world that doesn’t want us to have our freedom,” Anagnostakis
said. “And, because of what you guys have done, we do have those
freedoms.”
About one in 20 Americans alive today are veterans.

Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney said for many, personal battles take
over when they leave active duty.

“And the families play a role,” Maloney said. “They
serve too. We know that. But the rest of us have a role to play, too.
And for the one percent of us right now that are defending our freedom,
far and wide, all around the world right now, the other 99 percent of
us owe them the same level of commitment and devotion that my mom showed
to my dad. And all of us have a role to play in helping our vets come
home. There’s a road back for everybody, to a good life and a good
job.”
The 40-minute ceremony concluded with the traditional presenting of a
wreath at the veterans memorial, a 21-gun salute, and taps.
