WASHINGTON – There are an estimated more than 200 homeless veterans in the Mid-Hudson Valley and they require more attention than they are receiving, US Senator Charles Schumer says.
He is supporting legislation sponsored by Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut that would provide additional support for the estimated 50,000 homeless vets in the country.
“It would encourage landlords to rent to veterans by requiring the VA and HUD to work with local property owners to ensure that realtors are renting more units to them,” Schumer said.
The bill would also expand the definition of a “homeless veteran” to provide additional benefits for vets fleeing domestic violence, sexual assault and other life-threatening conditions in their current housing situation and would require that the VA establish and operate a National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans.
Schumer said the measures would help reduce homeless veterans and ensure they have access to affordable, safe housing.
