MONTICELLO – For the first time since the Sullivan County Legislature was created, the control will be in the hands of an elected Republican majority.
Republicans captured five, and possibly six of the nine members.
County GOP Chairman Richard Coombe has a theory as to why the voters made their choices on Tuesday’s Election Day.
“I think it was partially a reaction to a legislature that was somewhat dysfunctional and spent a lot of time bickering and a tremendous interest in the next two years to move Sullivan County ahead with gaming and with the health resort coming in,” he said. “I think it also was quite a message that non-partisan partnership creating a plan that would enable the county to grow in a responsible way is something the people really wanted and I think our candidates brought them to them.”
Coombe said it is premature to determine who will be the legislature chairman.
