TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Vertical shafts being drilled in the Town of Newburgh and in Wappinger as the prelude to construction of a new water tunnel under the Hudson River are moving along on schedule.
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection shafts should
be completed by next spring, said spokesman Adam Bosch.
“We are building these shafts to gain access to the subsurface so that they can begin going horizontally under some time next year,” Bosch.  “In Newburgh they were about 710 feet down going to a maximum depth of 900 feet and on the Wappinger side, they were about 570 feet down and they were heading toward an ultimate depth of 700 feet.”
Once those are completed, a giant water tunnel will be bored under the Hudson. When put into operation, the current Catskill Aqueduct will be shut down so that large leaks can be repaired.
