WHITE PLAINS – A former men’s basketball coach at Westchester Community College has been charged with nine felony counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument for allegedly altering basketball players’ grades on official transcripts.
Between May 11, 2012 and October 31, 2014, Tyrone Mushatt, 43, of the Bronx, who was the head men’s basketball coach, allegedly submitted nine forged WCC transcripts to seven colleges and universities in order to facilitate the transfer of eight basketball players to four year schools.
Mushatt was arrested by investigators from the district attorney’s office on Thursday morning. He was released on his own recognizance pending future court action.
The fraud came to light when the state Office of Inspector General, the
State University of New York Chancellor’s Office and the National
Junior College Athletic Association were alerted. The US Department of
Education also assisted in the investigation.
Mushatt’s years-long scheme was “an abuse of his position
that undermined the integrity of the college athletic system and violated
the trust of the vast majority of students who county on hard work in
the classroom and on the field of play to earn advancement,” said
Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott.
