NEWBURGH – Fire early Sunday morning destroyed the baking and warehouse areas of a tortilla bakery at 225 Washington Street in Newburgh. Three firefighters – two from the city and one from New Windsor – sustained minor injuries in the five-alarm blaze that broke out shortly after 5:30 a.m.
Apartments adjacent to the building were saved, but the retail area in the front of the shop suffered minor damage as the fire breached the entrance door, Assistant Fire Chief John Nokland said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. State fire inspectors and a fire detection dog from Westchester County were called in.
The blaze, which caused the roof of the bakery/warehouse section to collapse, was brought under control by 8 a.m.
Fire departments in the scene assisting Newburgh were Cornwall-on-Hudson, Orange Lake, Goodwill, Vails Gate, Castle Point and West Point. On standby were Salisbury Mills and Cronomer Valley.
