POUGHKEEPSIE – A State
Police bloodhound has been credited with tracking down a Suffolk County
murder suspect, who was arrested in Pawling.

Late on Tuesday afternoon, the Suffolk County Police Department alerted
State Police in Dutchess County that the suspect, Paul Leitgeb, 49, of
Lake Grove, New York, may be in the area of the Appalachian Trail in the
Town of Pawling.

A search of the area was conducted by the State Police Bloodhound and
Aviation Units. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and MTA Police
assisted at the scene.

Leitgeb was located in a densely wooded area near the Appalachian Trail
by State Police Bloodhound “Darby.”

The suspect was armed with a box cutter and threatened to harm himself
and police. He was taken into custody after a prolonged standoff with
troopers.

Leitgeb was transported by ambulance to MidHudson Regional Hospital in
Poughkeepsie with self-inflicted lacerations.
He was later turned over to Suffolk County Police detectives, who brought
him back to Long Island.
