KINGSTON – A Kingston man faces five years of probation when sentenced next month after pleading guilty to promoting a suicide attempt as a felony.
Ulster County District Attorney Holly Carnright said the case stems from the death of Catherine Egan, Paul Egan’s wife, due to complications from carbon monoxide poisoning at the couple’s home on January 12.
At that time, Egan stuffed clothing in a furnace ventilation duct allowing fumes to permeate throughout the house.
A family member called Kingston Police on the morning of January 12 to check on him based on a lack of telephone contact and unusual statements he made during a previous phone conversation.
When police arrived, Catherine Eagan, 59, was unconscious and died days later at a hospital in the Bronx.
During the investigation, Egan, 63, cited medical difficulties and depression that led to a suicide pact between him and his wife.
