TOWN OF NEWBURGH – A car
chase that began in the City of Newburgh ended Wednesday afternoon on
Interstate 84 in the Town of Newburgh, but not before the suspect struck
two police cars.

At 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday in the area of 262 First Street in the City
of Newburgh, police received a complaint of loud noise coming from a parked
vehicle.

As Police Officer Andrew Arestin approached the vehicle, a man later identified
as Mark Bressendor, 33, of Poughkeepsie, jumped into the vehicle and sped
off, almost striking the officer.

A chase ensured and the officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but Bressendor
drove onto I-84 in the Town of Newburgh. Officers from Town of Newburgh
Police and State Police attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver struck
both vehicles before he was stopped and arrested.

Newburgh City Police charged Bressendor with attempted assault, reckless
endangerment, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle,
resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, aggravated
unlicensed operation and a city code violation of loud noise.

Bressendor’s driving privileges were also suspended by the state.

He was issued 12 traffic tickets for a number of vehicle and traffic violations
while fleeing the police.

The vehicle was a rental that he had not brought back per the rental agreement,
and police are investigating that.

Bressendor is also expected to be charged with crimes through Newburgh
Town and State Police.
