SUFFERN – Two Suffern
Police officers are credited with saving a man from a burning home Sunday
night.

Officers Craig Yustein and Jeff Deluca arrived at the scene at 70 East
Maple Street shortly after 9 p.m., less than two minutes after the fire
call came in and they observed heavy smoke and flames pouring out of the
rear of the house.

They went inside to check for occupants and located a 48-year-old man
who was sleeping and unaware of smoke in the room and flames right outside
the room.

The officers brought the man to safety prior to the flames spreading to
his room.

Sgt. Deirdre Smith arrived next and coordinating with the Suffern Fire
Department to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters were also able to save the family cat from the flames.

The Suffern Detective Bureau is investigating the cause of the fire along
with the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office BCI Unit and the Suffern
fire and building inspectors.
