YONKERS – City school children in Yonkers were the recipients of over 500 backpacks filled with school supplies as Mayor Michael Spano and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Yazurlo handed them out Friday at Enrico Fermi School.
In the last four years, over 3,000 backpacks have been distributed thanks to donations from a number of local businesses.
“Providing backpacks and supplies to Yonkers students in need goes a long way to ensure a successful start to a new school year,” said Spano.
“Families with children returning to school have a heavy financial burden at this time of year, and it’s important that the community lend a helping hand,” said Tim Rooney, president of Empire City Casino, which was one of contributing sponsors of the donated supplies.
