MIDDLETOWN – SUNY Orange sophomore Stephanie Schwartz of Hamptonburgh is returning to school this fall with restored eyesight following a cornea transplant from an eye donor who left the gift of sight.
Schwartz withdrew from college in 2014 when her eyesight got worse. It began to fail one year earlier. She was diagnosed with keratoconus, a debilitating eye disease which causes the cornea, the clear outer covering of the eye, to become cone-shaped, eventually leading to blindness.
The young woman had cornea transplant surgery on July 16.   Her sight is steadily improving and is currently 20/50 with eyeglasses.
Her donated cornea tissue was provided by The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration.
