ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON – Legislation in the House of Representatives by Congressman Christopher Gibson (R, NY19) would increase access to college credits during high school and reduce the burdens of debt after college.
Gibson outlined his bipartisan bill at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson on Monday.
The lawmaker said students do better in college and are more likely to earn a degree when they are able to begin post-secondary studies while in high school.
“This particular bill changes the eligibility requirements for the Pell grants,” Gibson said. “Right now we have individuals who go to early college like Bard which has seven early colleges across the nation; highly successful. And then you have community colleges that have smart scholar programs that allow for a structured environment for high school students to also early college credit. This bill will allow for these individuals to get access to their Pell grants, which would cut down on their costs.”
Gibson said his legislation has support in the Senate as well.
