NEW CITY – State Senator David Carlucci
(D-New City) has been invited to the White House by President Obama to
celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act
on July 26, 1990. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals
with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis
of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion.

The ADA also assures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities to
businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs
and services, and telecommunications.

“The Americans with Disabilities Act revolutionized the law and
care for people with disabilities, and it is truly amazing how far we
have come,” said Carlucci. “That being said, there is still
imperative work that needs to be done to improve the lives of people with
disabilities.”

Carlucci has served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Mental Health
and Developmental Disabilities, and is currently chairman of the Senate
Committee on Social Services.
