NEWBURGH – Officials cut the ribbon
on the new Independent Square Apartments in Newburgh on Wednesday following
completion of the project sponsored by Independent Living, a disability
advocacy and service organization headquartered in the city.
State, county and bank funding paid for the 74 affordable apartments.
The project is one that is “the culmination of Independent Living Executive Director Doug Hovey’s vision and Jonah Mandelbaum’s passion and talent,” said Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus. Mandelbaum’s company built the facility.
“Independent Square is an example of Orange County benefiting from an innovative public-private partnership,” Neuhaus said.
The new housing will address the needs of the local population with developmental disabilities and people with other special needs.
