PATTERSON – A head-on crash between a Fed Ex truck and a Dodge Charger closed Route 22 for several hours Monday and resulted in injury to the drivers of both vehicles.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office investigated the 10 a.m. mishap south of the Haviland Hollow Road intersection.
Police said the Dodge, driven by Javier Santiago, 55 of Pawling was traveling northbound when the vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck the Fed Ex Mercedes van driven by Mark Retallick, 53, of Southbury, Connecticut.
Fire and EMS from the Patterson and Putnam Lake Fire Departments rushed to the scene and transported both drivers to Danbury Hospital.
State Police, the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services and Putnam EMS Director Robert Cuomo assisted.
Authorities initially summoned a medivac helicopter but since it was on another call, EMS decided to transport the victims to the hospital by ambulance.
