Orange County man sentenced in drunk driving death of mom of twins toddlers

BRONX – A Montgomery man has been sentenced to the maximum term
in state prison allowable by law for the January 14 death of the mother
of twin Toddlers.

Augustus Jenkins, 29, was driving drunk in the Bronx when he struck and
killed Nydja Herring, 32, of the Bronx, who was crossing the street at
East Tremont and Van Nest avenues on the way to the store to buy milk
for her twin two-year-olds.

Jenkins was sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in prison following a jury
trial where he was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide.

Jenkins was coming back from the wake for a baby who had died of sudden
infant death syndrome.

Mrs. Herring was scheduled to donate a kidney to her own mother, who is
still on the organ transplant list.

When Jenkins was speeding along while drunk, a friend with two children,
ages four and 11, where in the car. Jenkins was driving with a suspended
license.
