CARMEL – A Brewster man was convicted in Putnam County Court on Wednesday of two counts of sexual abuse for abusing a six-year-old girl.
Michael Cunningham, 68, faces 14 years in state prison and lifetime sexual offense registration when he is sentenced in July.
The Child Advocacy Center, Child Protective Services and Women’s Resource Center provided support and services for the victim and her family during the time leading up to and including the trial.
The verdict marks the third successful prosecution and conviction of a violent felony sex offense after trial in Putnam County since March.
The first, Julio Soto, was sentenced to 57 years in state prison. The second, Victor Cruz-Garcia, awaits sentencing and faces 50 years in prison.
“Successful prosecutions, such as these, do not happen by accident,” said Putnam District Attorney Adam Levy. “It is only by cooperating with our local, state and federal law enforcement agencies that we can prosecute the guilty, protect our victims, and ensure that justice is served.”
