NEWBURGH – The POW/MIA flag will be flown permanently under the American flag on all Newburgh buildings beginning this Memorial Day weekend. City Manager Michael Ciaravino issued the directive to fly the flag on all municipal flagpoles. “Many of these servicemen and women have been lost in the chaos of war with the grief magnified for their families and their fellow Americans because of the inability to determine whether they perished or survived,” he said.
The POW/MIA soldiers from the City of Newburgh are Andrew Lawlor Kingsley, who lived on Johnson Street and fought in Ward War II; Fred Roundtree, who lived on Campbell Street and fought in the Korean War; and Jack Wolpe, who lived on Courtney Avenue and fought in the Vietnam War.
The new POW/MIA flags will be flown of City Hall, the Public Safety Building, the fire department, police department, Delano-Hitch Stadium, City Court House, Unico Park at the waterfront, and the Orange County Memorial Park on Leroy Place.
“I would like to honor and recognize the extraordinary Americans who walk among us in our daily lives – especially their families on this Memorial Day Holiday,” Ciaravino said. “The PO/MIA flag symbolizes the City of Newburgh’s remembrance, support and commitment to those who have defended out democratic rights and freedom.”
“No one comes entirely back from war,” said City Historian Mary McTamaney. “Everyone has a piece missing from the rest of their lives whether it is a lost comrade or a lost emotion.”
