NEW WINDSOR – A state law that takes effect on September 1 will eliminate sales and use tax and tax on repairs, maintenance and upgrades to general aviation aircraft and that is seen as a major plus for companies like Cessna Citation, which operates a maintenance facility for its jets at Stewart Airport.
Without those exemptions, there was a concern that aircraft companies might relocate to neighboring states that do not have the tax.
But the new New York State law will translate into big bucks for Stewart, said Fritz Kass of New Windsor, a board member of the New York Aviation Management Association, who briefed the Stewart Airport Commission Tuesday.
“We are talking about $100 million in annual new activity over the next five years as we ramp up to this,” he said. “We are talking about five jobs per plane, up to 500 new jobs coming to Stewart that are going to locate in the Hudson Valley, live here, work here.”
Kass said that will also translate into construction jobs for new hangars
that will have to be built to accommodate the increased business.
