WASHINGTON – US Senator Charles Schumer urged the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak to implement new actions to immediately improve safety while positive train control is fully operational. He asked both to consider putting two crew members in the locomotive train cab at all times to help improve safety and accountability.
He said cameras would also help deter distracted train operation, help with accident investigations, and improve overall safety. He noted inward facing cameras have been recommended by the NTSB and are being installed by the MTA on Metro- North and Long Island Rail Road trains.
The senator said on Tuesday he will also continue the fight for new, safer trains, and push Congress to make sure Amtrak has the federal funding it needs to be sure its infrastructure is safe and up-to-date.
