YONKERS – The long-vacant Longfellow building on Mulberry Street in Yonkers is no longer. It was demolished late last week.
Abandoned since 1976, the former junior high school has been the subject of a number of redevelopment plans and suffered from significant fire damage, roof damage and deterioration over the years. The less than one-acre site is owned by the city.
“For too long, Longfellow stood as a symbol of inaction,” said Mayor Michael Spano.  “Not anymore. I’m proud to say that Longfellow is just the latest in a string of eyesores that have been removed in the city.”
Yonkers began the demolition of the site in January, working through the winter in order to complete the project by summer, and removed 6,700 tons of building material.
Workers will now lay clean fill and top soil, add plantings and erect a permanent fence to help beautify the site until redevelopment plans are finalized.
