Forest fire being contained

SHAWANGUNK RIDGE – The forest fire that has been raging on the Shawangunk Ridge mountain range is 90 percent contained, according to Ulster County Executive Michael Hein.
To help battle the blaze, air tankers have been brought in to drop water on the flames. They include the use of two State Police helicopters, two Blackhawk helicopters from the Army Reserve and a Fire Boss air tanker from Canada capable of scooping 800 gallons of water while flying and dousing a fire.
US Senator Charles Schumer has spoken to FEMA leadership, which is ready
to provide aid once the state formally asks for it.
“As soon as the state makes the request, I am very optimistic it will be approved,” Schumer said.
The fire started last Sunday and has consumed over 2,600 acres of woodlands. There have been no reports of injuries, but some residents of the area were ordered to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure.
Route 52 from Old Plank Road to Cragsmoor Road in the Walker Valley/Cragsmoor reopened late Wednesday afternoon.
