WASHINGTON – As the forest fire in the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest continues to burn, US Senator Charles Schumer urged FEMA to be ready to issue a disaster declaration for federal support and resources.
“It is critical that we get federal resources on the ground as soon as possible, so that these Hudson Valley communities can cover the costs to fight back these fires as quickly as possible,” the senator said on Tuesday. “So we want FEMA to stand ready to immediately approve a Fire Management Assistance Grant declaration as well as all other available support the very moment it hits their desk.”
The fire, which broke out last Sunday in the Town of Mamakating, in Sullivan
County, has spread to Ulster County, from 30 acres to more than 1,700
in the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest resulting in the mandatory evacuation
of homes in the area.
