NEW ROCHELLE – All state college campuses have adopted a uniform policy and procedure when dealing with sexual violence and the Cuomo administration is pushing to have it adopted across the board to include private colleges as well.
Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul met with students and officials at The College of New Rochelle on Wednesday to explain the state procedure and push to have it adopted by that school and others statewide.
Those individual private colleges can adopt their own versions, but there
is no uniformity, said Hochul.
“We found that they are all patchwork and students have different rights and deal with different definition of what is sexual attack and sexual assault across the state, so we would hope a state law requiring uniformity would be the best way to go,” she said. “Short of that you can leave it up to individual campuses, but right now it is not working. This is an opportunity to have every student in the State of New York protected and have the same rights.”
Hochul said they would hope the state legislature would approve the across-the-board college policy by June.
