TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Former Newburgh Town Supervisor Robert Kirkpatrick died Thursday at age 87.
Kirkpatrick, who was born and raised in Newburgh, became a town councilman in 1972 and town supervisor in 1984.
He was instrumental in bringing sewer service and securing a post office for the town as well as supporting its police department.
Kirkpatrick is credited with coining the phrase as the town being the “Crossroads of the Northeast, promoting the fact that the town’s location was ideal for “small and medium-sized businesses which can bring new jobs and tax rateables to the township” while still maintaining the delicate environmental balance of the town and preserving the rural and affordable lifestyle it offered.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda, three children and their spouses, and grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 20 at White & Venuto Funeral Home in the Town of Newburgh with burial at New Hurley Cemetery in Wallkill.
