Former Town of Newburgh supervisor Kunkel dies

TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Funeral mass for Robert Kunkel will be held
on Monday, March 16 at St. Patrick’s Church in Newburgh. Kunkel,
who served as Newburgh town supervisor from 1989 to 1993, died on Monday,
March 9 at age 85.
Kunkel had a long tenure of public service, also as a member of the town
board for 16 years. He served three terms as councilman before he was
supervisor, from 1977 to 1989, and two years after retiring as supervisor
he came back and was elected to a fourth term as councilman from 1995
to 1999.
He was also active in Republican politics having been named Republican
of the Year in 1995 by the Newburgh Town Republican Committee.
Town Clerk Andrew Zarutskie called Kunkel “a cornerstone of our
town government for nearly a quarter century.” Zarutskie said he
was “an inspiration, an example and a valuable teacher for many of
us, including myself.”
He is survived by his wife, Rosalie, four daughters and a son.
