NEW ROCHELLE – The number of most
serious crimes in New Rochelle went down in 2013, according to the just-released
2014 annual report, making the city one of the safest in the nation, officials
said. The city was in the top 10 percent, ranked #11, among similarly-sized
cities with populations of 75,000 to 99,000. The city also retained the
lowest crime rate among similar municipalities in Westchester County and
the state.

In Part 1, or most serious crimes, there was a six percent drop with a
33 percent decline in auto theft, 10 percent drop in robbery, six percent
decline in larceny and five percent drop in burglaries.

The department responded to close to 50,000 calls for service in 2014.

“These are the lowest figures we’ve seen in over five decades,
since 1960,” Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll said.

The report also details increasing DWI enforcement by 67 percent and the
installation of 47 municipal surveillance cameras throughout the city.
