POUGHKEEPSIE – A total of 67 pints of blood were collected from area residents who turned out at the recent American Red Cross blood drive in memory of fallen Poughkeepsie City Det. John Falcone.
The memorial blood drive, held on February 23 at the Italian Community Center, included 17 people who donated for the first time.
“We could not think of a better way to honor Det. Falcone’s memory, but by people continuing to give blood to those who need it,” said City Police Chief Ronald Knapp.
Since the blood drives began, contributions have come from judges, civil servants and the community.
“There is a connection between law enforcement and the community and it shows,” said Mary Ellen McCue of the Fraternal Order of Police. “People are giving the gift of life in honor of a hero.”
Falcone was shot and killed as he rescued a small child during a violent and deadly domestic dispute.
