NEWBURGH – Air testing in the Newburgh public works garage determined there are raised levels of volatile organic compounds in the indoor air, predominantly on the second floor of the building.
While they do not exceed OSHA permissible exposure levels, City Manager Michael Ciaravino is moving those employees over to City Hall.
“Our short-term approach is to relocate the staff that is most impacted. In the other parts of the building where the ceilings are high and the ventilation is such, it is less of a concern to us,” he said. “We are informed that the same chemicals that are found in brake fluids and brake cleaner are present in some of these vapor emissions analysis.”
All of the governmental regulatory agencies have been informed of the testing results. Ciaravino said the next step is to analyze what to do to remediate the problem.
It is believed trench pits were dug on the site under the DPW building for waste materials when DuPont Stauffer occupied the property.
