WHITE PLAINS – A 24-year-old New Rochelle man was sentenced in
Westchester County Court on Tuesday to one to three years in prison for
driving a car that crashed, resulting in the October 7, 2013 death of
Shaquan Jackson, his friend, who was a front seat passenger.

Juan Barragan-Reyes pled guilty last October to one count of manslaughter,
two counts of vehicular manslaughter, one count of unlawfully fleeing
a police officer, two counts of misdemeanor DWI, one count each of reckless
driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding
harassment and unlawful possession of marijuana.

The incident occurred when a New Rochelle Police officer was interviewing
Barragan-Reyes’ girlfriend in front of her apartment concerning
a domestic violence incident when Reyes drove up, stopped briefly, pointed
a finger at his girlfriend and then drove away at a high rate of speed.

The officer followed him in a marked police car and saw him speeding through
red lights before losing sight of him. A short distance away, minutes
later Reyes’ car was spotted; it had hit a tree and retaining wall
before flipping over.
Both men were ejected; neither was wearing a seatbelt.

Jackson died close to two hours after the midnight incident in the early
hours.
