MONTICELLO – We have greater opportunities
today with the foundation Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others in the
civil rights movement laid. That message from Sandra Oxford, president
of the Sullivan County NAACP, on the day set aside to commemorate his
birthday.

Oxford said young people need to listen to the universality of what Dr.
King said.

“I believe today young people more than ever need to hear Dr. King’s
message, the message of non-violent resistance, the message that the civil
rights movement was the movement rooted in humanitarian and non-violent
activism,” she said. “I believe it is very relevant today
and with that foundation, with that footing, it allows us to reach higher.”
Ceremonies, teach-ins and services were held at many locations around
the region on Monday.
