WAPPINGER – Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) asked FEMA to “urgently review” Dutchess County flood maps that have “unfairly placed” more than 1,100 new homeowners in the flood plain.
“These flood maps have been an absolute nightmare for homeowners across Dutchess County – it’s time for FEMA to start from scratch,” Maloney said. “My neighbors who have never experienced flooding cannot and should not be forced to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for flood insurance that’s not needed.
After FEMA published new maps, Dutchess County properties dubbed “high-risk” went from 4,127 to 5,274 in 2012.
FEMA is required to review community flood maps every five years and assess whether to revise or update them. He noted that in the Wappingers Falls and Fishkill area, the federal agency has made dozens of amendments and revisions to their maps since they were released in 2012.
Maloney and FEMA will hold an information session about the flood plain issue tonight (Thursday) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wappinger Town Hall.
