WHITE PLAINS – A Westchester County grand jury unsealed a 16-count indictment charging three employees of a Bronxville group home with abuse and falsely reporting an incident involving a person with developmental disabilities who was in their care.
The incident came to the attention of law enforcement officials when it was reported to the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs hotline. A call was also made to the Tuckahoe Police Department, which responded.
Kim Thompson, 49, of Albany, was charged with the felonies endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person, or an incompetent or physically disabled person; four counts of misdemeanor endangerment; assault, two counts of offering a false instrument for filing; and official misconduct. Bail was set at $5,000.
Monsurat Dindi, 54, of the Bronx, was charged with felony and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person or incompetent or physically disabled person; assault; offering a false instrument for filing; and official misconduct. Bail was also set at $5,000.
Maxine Smith, 44, of the Bronx faces two counts of offering a false instrument for filing and official misconduct. Bail was set at $1,000.
The indictment stems from an incident in which a service recipient sustained serious injuries when Thompson and Dindi improperly loaded her into an agency van for transport to an off-site function. The woman cried out in pain when the leg supports to her wheelchair where smashed as the pair closed the van’s wheelchair lift-door.
The victim failed to receive medical treatment for her injuries for several hours. She sustained a fractured foot and lacerations to her toes.
All three defendants later filed reports with their agency that contained false information about the incident.
They have been placed on administrative leave.
