KINGSTON – The City of Kingston has taken the first step in what could be a lengthy process to ask the state for permission to establish a school speed zone camera program.

Mayor Steven Noble outlined the demonstration program that is underway in New York City, Albany and Syracuse to the common council’s Public Safety and Government Committee Wednesday evening.

“We all know that speeding in and around our neighborhoods is something that is spoken to a lot during our ward meetings and during our conversations with the community, and so, this could be one really effective way at our schools to be able to implement this new program,” he said.

Legislation approving the program has been introduced in both houses of the legislature. It must be approved and signed into law by the governor before the demonstration project could begin.
