CARMEL – A funeral procession from Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel to the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River took place Monday honoring Brewster Police Sergeant Richard Gurniak who died on duty Saturday.

Some three dozen police vehicles representing departments throughout Putnam, Dutchess and Westchester accompanied the remains of the fallen officer through the village of Brewster, onto Routes 684, 287 and the Thruway to the funeral home where the sergeant’s service will take place on Friday.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville expressed sadness on behalf of all members of law enforcement. “Our hearts go out to Sgt. Gurniak’s family and friends during this difficult time. We honor his bravery, sacrifice, and service to our community.”

Brewster Mayor James Schoenig recalled hiring the sergeant two years ago. “He had a stellar career in New York City, which carried over to Brewster. Richard was respected by the entire Department. Sgt. Gurniak died doing what he loved doing—protecting residents of our community.”

Members of the State Police and Putnam Sheriff’s Office are patrolling the half square mile village in the absence of Brewster Police.
