ALBANY – All but one county in the Hudson Valley/Catskills region saw unemployment increase year over year in August, the State Labor Department reported Tuesday.

  • Sullivan County joblessness declined by one-tenth of one percent, going from 3.5 percent in August 2018 to 3.4 percent this August.
  • Columbia County increased from 2.9 percent to 3.1 percent.
  • Dutchess County increased from 3.5 percent to 3.8 percent.
  • Greene County unemployment increased from 4.0 percent in August of last year to 4.4 percent this year.
  • Orange County increased from 3.8 percent in August 2018 to 4.1 percent this year.
  • Putnam County rose from 3.6 percent to 3.9 percent.
  • Rockland County rose from 3.7 percent to 3.9 percent.
  • Ulster County increased from 3.8 percent to 3.9 percent.
  • Westchester County rose from 3.9 percent to 4.1 percent.

Columbia County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state while Sullivan County was ranked fifth, Dutchess County was ranked 13, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester were each ranked 20th.

The August 2019 unemployment rate for the Hudson Valley Region is 4.0 percent.  That is up from 3.7 percent in July 2019 and also up from 3.8 percent in August 2018.

In August 2019, there were 45,800 unemployed in the region, up from 43,300 in July 2019 and up from 43,200 in August 2018.  Year-over-year in August 2019, labor force was unchanged.
