GOSHEN – John McCarey, Orange County’s director of real estate, began working for the county in 1982 as a consultant. In 2000 he was hired as the county’s full-time director of real estate. He has worked under five of the six county executives, But on Friday, July 26, he will be retiring.

McCarey has seen much growth in the county since he began, growth that he believes was appropriate and not excessive.

“The number of parcels in the county went from 106,000 to 142,000 parcels so there has been quite a bit of growth in the county,” he said, noting that tax mapping has transitioned from pen and paper to computerization to GIS.

McCarey, now 79 years old, who in the 1970s served on the Middletown Common Council, plans to golf and spend time with his family when he retires.
