POUGHKEEPSIE – The Tuesday afternoon shooting that sent two teens to local hospitals was an “ambush-style” attack according to City of Poughkeepsie Police Captain Rich Wilson.  The investigation following the shooting has police searching for a black man who was wearing a gray hoodie, with the hood up, and a COVID-style mask covering his face.

The original Mid-Hudson coverage of the shooting, including video from the scene can be found here.

Multiple calls were received by city 911 dispatchers on Tuesday afternoon reporting gunfire in the vicinity of Fox Terrace and South White Street in the vicinity of Gray’s Market.  At least one call indicated that a victim of gunfire was located on Church Street (eastbound 44/55).  Officers were on the scene moments later and found the 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the neck and an officer immediately began life-saving measures before he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.  “I strongly believe that the actions of our officer helped contribute to the survival of that victim,” Captain Wilson said on Thursday.  Police were not aware of the second victim until the 19-year-old arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle.

The suspects and the victims are not students within the Poughkeepsie City School District.  “They were not part of the school day,” Wilson emphasized.

Police have identified four different people who were in the vicinity of the shooting, who were all armed with handguns, according to video evidence collected by police.  Wilson said detectives and the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office have been evaluating the evidence collected following the shooting, and called the work a “dynamic and live” investigation.
