BEACON – Police in the City of Beacon are investigating a reported case of a man who allegedly threatened to shoot people on Main Street on Sunday.

A review of police body camera footage showed an officer armed with a patrol rifle, ordering the man several times to put his hands on a wall. He refused, but eventually put his hands on the wall.

When other officers arrived and attempted to handcuff the man, body cam footage showed he pulled his arm away from them and in front of his body.

Officers, still unsure if he was armed, forced the suspect to the ground and employed a control technique called “body segmenting” in which officers use pressure on the hips, head and legs in order to control a combative suspect’s movement while simultaneously avoiding applying pressure on any areas that would impact the person’s ability to breath.

The suspect was then placed in handcuffs without further incident.

He was transported to Beacon Police headquarters where he was offered and refused medical treatment.

Police said witnesses to the original incident confirmed the suspect had threatened people on Main Street with shooting, the investigation into his actions and motivation is continuing and charges are pending. Charges are still pending.

It is the police department’s understanding that witness footage of the use of force incident exists and witnesses have been contacted.

A complete investigation into the use of force is being conducted.
