NORTH SALEM – Firefighters responding to a report of a structure fire early Wednesday morning realized they would be in for a long fight when a glow lit up the sky near the Putnam-Westchester County line.

A large barn along Titicus Road in North Salem was engulfed in flames along with two expensive vehicles when first responders arrived on the scene around 12:30 a.m.

Croton Falls Fire personnel under the command of Chief Jeffrey Daday summoned mutual aid and members of the Brewster, Carmel and Mahopac Fire departments rushed to the scene along with firefighters from Bedford Hills, Goldens Bridge, Katonah and South Salem.

EMS personnel from the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps and an Empress Paramedic were also pressed into action along with the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services.

Chief Daday said the area is not serviced by a municipal water system and since no fire hydrants were available, water had to be brought in by tanker trucks.

Despite the efforts of firefighters, the 40-foot-by-40-foot building was destroyed along with a Range Rover and Mercedes Benz.

No injuries were reported to firefighters or animals. The cause of the fire was deemed to be accidental.
