POUGHKEEPSIE – Twelve infantry members arrived in Poughkeepsie on Saturday under the leadership of Colonel Dave Laguer.  The soldiers are part of the New York Grey Cadets and were not in town on a military mission.  Instead, the group was here to attend a literacy program.

“It’s important to get the kids out of the Bronx and into different environments,” Laguer, the group’s first and only battalion commander to date, told Mid-Hudson News.

The Legionnaire Greys Cadets, operating as the New York Grey Cadets, started on September 2, 1997, as a Boy Scouts of America chartered group.  The organization is now a registered 501 c 3 and are an education facilitator and partner of the NYC Department of Education.

Since its inception, the organization has served many children from all the boroughs of New York City. Children from other neighboring counties have also become members of the Grey Cadets.

The cadets offer an after-school program at the Isobel Rooney School (M.S. 80) in the Bronx Community Board 7 area, according to the website.
